  • Condition: Recent find. Survivor from the 1930's. Most of these sets have "disintegrated" Excellent condition with some wear and pitting as shown. Very interesting early examples of models not readily seen or found anymore.

    Description

    This is a Brown & Sharpe  Set of Stand Tools No. 847 for Students & Apprentices 1930's.
    A rare find.
    I found an original catalog listing (See last photo) from Brown & Sharpe #29, 1924.  This set was probably made soon after that catalog release because Brown & Sharpe patented on March 10th 1925 the new style locking rod. The patent would have a knurled top that would allow the operator to rotate the rod and reverse the orientation of the side it would lock on the blade. They put the patent date, (not the patent number) on the frames of these models.
    The  6" model 402  has both the Tri-Square and Center Finder marked with the March 1925 Patent Date. See Photos.
    You only find these dated frames from the late 1920 and into the 1930's.
    Later they would put the patent number on top of the lock nut. (not on the frames.)
    All the tools in this set match the catalog numbers, though there are variations in models from the 1920's and from models made after the 1930's.
    These are early examples, are probably from the early 1930's and exhibit some interesting variations from later model.
    Of interest to note:
    The 650 Center Finder has "Double Depth of Sharp Thread." which would be changed by the 1940's to "Double Depth Amer. Nat. Thread."
    The 835 has a solid point shaped like a needle. Later the solid point was less sharp and these sets eventually would use the adjustable point instead.
    The 810 Divider is also very pointed and has very thin arms. Later they were thick with just a short point.
    The metal embossed and painted Logo attached to the inside cover says "BROWN & SHARP MFC. CO." which in the 1957 case was just "Brown & Sharpe" with logo above it.
    This case is leather with stitched grey/black  "brushed flannel" fabric. Later models, like the 1957 catalog where blue. (I don't think this was ever blue.)
    Condition is as shown in photos. Some of the seams in the case are split. The leather dried and some ends are curled. Obvious stains.
    No engravings or owners marks.
    Case is old (80+ years) . All the clips and tie downs still function.
